American singer-songwriter Valerie June is set to release her new album, ‘Owls, Omens, And Oracles,’ this Spring.
Her blend of vintage soul, folk, and indie creates a distinct auditory experience, enhanced by her uniquely captivating voice.
The album, scheduled to be released on April 11th, continues her artistic journey. It is produced by M. Ward (known for his work with Mavis Staples and She & Him) and engineered by Pierre de Reeder (associated with Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis). Valerie collaborates with various artists on the album, including The Blind Boys of Alabama and Norah Jones.
The new single, ‘Joy, Joy!’, seeks to counteract negativity and find optimism in a world that is becoming increasingly challenging. Valerie plays the acoustic guitar alongside Kaveh Rastegar on bass (who has worked with John Legend and Beck) and Steven Hodges on drums (known for his work with Tom Waits and David Lynch); Nate Walcott (affiliated with Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band) provides keys and horn arrangements.
In a tribute to the significance of looking beyond despair, she expresses: “And when you feel you’re not enough / Has this old been hard and rough / A golden seed beneath dark soil / To seek the sun is often rough…”
Valerie June reflects…
“Everyone has experienced moments of darkness, depression, anxiety, stress, illness, or pain. Some say it takes mud to grow a lotus flower. This song contemplates the difficult times we may encounter: failing, falling, losing, being held back, being silenced, and being excluded while still maintaining a purely innocent and childlike joy. I come from a lineage of ancestors who embodied this truth through the creation of blues music. Even generations later, the inner joy they instilled in us shines and uplifts cultures worldwide. From a global perspective to our communities, what would a city council dedicated to fostering inner joy for all of its citizens look like?”
