Katie Gregson-MacLeod is back with her new single ‘Teenage Love’.
The Scottish singer-songwriter gained viral recognition with her track ‘complex’, a poignant exploration of love and sorrow. Since then, she has released several exciting projects — including 2023's ‘Big Red’ — while expanding her artistic vision and growing her fanbase.
Now signed to Last Recordings On Earth, an independent label run by Matt Maltese, Katie is set to unveil her latest work.
Released recently, ‘Teenage Love’ draws inspiration from notable influences in her music — the sorrowful depth of Leonard Cohen, the lyrical beauty of Elliot Smith, and the melodic style of Lucy Dacus — while adding a new and refreshing element.
Originating as a poem crafted after a studio session in Los Angeles, Katie Gregson-MacLeod channels her long-held feelings of resentment into ‘Teenage Love’. With its cathartic energy and powerful chorus, it has become a highlight in her live performances — a TikTok clip has garnered significant attention, attracting endorsements from Phoebe Bridgers and Olivia Rodrigo.

‘Teenage Love’ celebrates that small yet powerful part of me where anger resides. I composed most of the song over two years ago, trying to make sense of the resentment I felt on behalf of my younger self. As a teenage girl, there's a perception that being ‘angry’ is the least attractive quality. Only in retrospect did I see the strength that anger could have provided me back then; a strength I believed I would attain by striving to seem ‘mature’ or ‘patient’.
The song does not dwell on regret but raises many questions. It sorts through remnants of past relationships; lingering questions and feelings of resentment. It also finds humor in the situation, which is essential for understanding it.
