The English group Flyte has released a new song titled ‘I’m Not There.’
The band is on an extensive tour and will be finishing a series of performances in Ireland and continental Europe this Spring. In the midst of this, songwriters Will Taylor and Nick Hill have taken a moment to unveil fresh material.
‘I’m Not There’ is part of a series of sessions conducted in the West Country with BRIT Award-winning producer Ethan Johns (known for his work with Paul McCartney, Ray LaMontagne, and Laura Marling) at his home studio, marking a gentle transition into a new phase for Flyte.
With a soothing tone, the song evokes elements of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in its subtlety, while also referencing some of their collaborative efforts and capturing the pristine pop melodies reminiscent of Sigrid.
There is an element of darkness as well, with Will Taylor reflecting…
“Despite the benefits I've gained from regular therapy and the enlightening practice of songwriting over the years, struggles with self-love, self-forgiveness, and family trauma still weigh on me—sometimes quite heavily.”
“This song originated from a particularly heavy emotional state, with my mind clouded. I was tapping into my subconscious, completely absent. From the few times we've performed it live, it's been notable how quickly men of various ages have expressed their immediate connection to the song—interpret that as you wish.”
“It may also be interesting to note that this is a genuine live performance, recorded right at the beginning of our album recording session. We played it once, and that's what the listener hears, aside from a single piano added later. Nick, Ethan, and I had never played together as a trio before, and you can hear us introducing ourselves to one another, navigating through the music as we performed. Ethan, besides being an exceptional producer/engineer, is a highly skilled and emotionally intelligent drummer, which created a safety net that allowed us to dive into the performance without any preparation.”
“It has shown us that in those uncertain moments, the truth tends to emerge most easily."
Tune in now.
