Kneecap director Rich Peppiatt received a BAFTA award last night (February 16th).

The Belfast trio adapted their story into a semi-fictional debut film, earning widespread acclaim. Collaborating with English filmmaker Rich Peppiatt, the group attended the glamorous BAFTA ceremony with nominations in several categories.

Director Rich Peppiatt claimed the award for outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer.

“It’s funny how life works,” he remarked as he accepted the trophy.

The Irish-language film was nominated in six categories, with Peppiatt emphasizing that Kneecap represents a movement and that “everyone should have their language respected, their culture respected.”

This marks another success for Kneecap, who recently triumphed in court against former Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch—the Department for Business and Trade along with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport were found to have improperly denied a grant from the Music Export Growth Scheme.

Kneecap is set to headline the Wide Awake Festival in London this May.
