The Manchester alt-pop favorite shares her vision for the perfect night out.
Each month, we invite a different Very Special Guest Star to design their ideal gig for our latest print magazine. For our February 2025 issue, we had the pleasure of welcoming alt-pop icon and all-around fun person Phoebe Green to DIY’s esteemed back page.
**Venue: Blackpool Tower Ballroom**
I was born in Blackpool, and it’s an incredible venue, so I had to choose it. We often visited the Blackpool Tower, enjoyed the circus, and I attended several gigs at the Tower Ballroom. It’s such a beautiful, unique place.
**Supports: CMAT, St. Vincent, Chappell Roan**
I’ve really thought this through! I might not have a specific headliner, but I envision a cabaret-style experience. For the afternoon and early evening, we’d have drinks served at sit-down tables. CMAT would kick things off because I think she’s fantastic and an outstanding performer. She’d set a great mood for us. Following her would be St. Vincent and Chappell Roan—this is still just the afternoon into the evening, by the way.
**Headliners: Yves Tumor, Tyler, The Creator, Lady Gaga**
By night, it would become a bit darker; the tables would be cleared away, and we’d have Yves Tumor, Tyler, The Creator, and Lady Gaga performing. It’s a jam-packed day—an enormous day! Each of them would be styled as an elevated version of themselves, which is quite a challenge since the artists I've chosen are already pretty extravagant. But it would blend their personal styles with the glam of Blackpool ballroom. Think sequins! It would be an incredibly interactive, camp, and delightfully ridiculous event.
**Who are you going with?**
I probably wouldn’t send out invites; I believe the right people would just show up. It takes a special kind of person to attend. I’d have my own table with my family, my girlfriend, and my friends. As soon as it was time to move the tables, my parents would definitely head home, leaving me with my sisters and friends.
**What are you drinking?**
This is such a dream concept, and I've heard about it before since I never would’ve thought of it myself: bring your own booze, and you can take whatever you bring to the bar to request a special drink. So, you could show up with a bottle of tequila and ask for a margarita at the bar.
**Pre-gig activity**
When I used to visit Blackpool Tower, there was this dinosaur ride that just went around, and there was this giant T-Rex—at least in my memory, it either lunged at you or opened its mouth. It was pretty shocking, but I loved it. We’d go on that ride, and if the circus is running, that would be fantastic. As long as it’s ethical and not harmful to animals...
**Is there an afterparty?**
There are quite a few rooms—this is Blackpool Tower after all. In one room, we’d have karaoke. You won’t believe this, but I’ve never done karaoke. I know, it's hard to believe! It’s such a ‘me’ thing. But now that I’ve waited so long to try it, it feels like losing my virginity; I want to wait for the perfect moment. If I had to choose a karaoke song, it would be “Speechless” by Lady Gaga. In another room, there would be a DJ set from James Blake, with all the other acts allowed to join in and out.
**Any additional extras?**
Of course, being in Blackpool means we’d have access to three different piers, so we could ride whatever people wanted. It might not be the best idea to go on the waltzers after drinking, but if you have a strong stomach, we’d definitely hit the pier for an all-nighter after the party. That would be incredible. While I wouldn’t recommend swimming in the sea in Blackpool, ideally, it would also be fantastic to do a cold plunge in the morning.
