Rebecca Black’s journey from being the subject of memes to becoming a hyperpop gay icon doesn’t require deep analysis: anyone who created the awkward and campy ‘Friday’ can certainly join the ranks of Dorian Electra. It’s clear that Rebecca’s dedication to her artistic vision continues as she navigates this unconventional landscape, where missteps can often lead to the right paths. Embracing the daring aspects of hyperpop and EDM that have influenced her adulthood, ‘SALVATION’ serves as a compelling follow-up to her 2023 debut (the intriguing pop blend ‘Let Her Burn’), amplifying her claim that she truly knows how to celebrate the end of the week. This album is grand, yet not overwhelming, since its take on a party is intriguingly dissected into both an industrial and emotional exploration, particularly evident in the disorienting, drum’n’bass-infused ‘Tears In My Pocket’ and the delightfully saccharine hyperpop track ‘Sugar Water Cyanide’. At other moments, it embraces the allure of mainstream appeal, showcasing her bold strategy in becoming an IT-girl: it’s challenging to envision anything more explosive than the bridge of ‘Do You Ever Think About Me?’; or the runway-ready ‘TRUST!’; or the commercial standout ‘Twist The Knife’, which blends contemporary disco vibes reminiscent of Kylie Minogue with a touch of eerie Kim Petras. Exceeding ‘Let Her Burn’ in ambition, quality, and conceptual depth, ‘SALVATION’ affirms that Rebecca Black has courage and truly deserves recognition.
