Hope Tala initially gained recognition by merging R&B with neo-soul and a hint of bossa nova, and her debut album ‘Hope Handwritten’ continues this trend. Throughout its 16 tracks, Hope invites listeners on a journey as she delves into themes of love, heartbreak, and, of course, hope. The bossa nova-inspired opener ‘Growing Pains’ reflects on the passage of time and personal development, while ‘Lights Camera Action’ features upbeat R&B and a catchy bassline that questions what truly matters for enjoyment. Additionally, the vibrant ‘Thank Goodness’ sees Hope expressing gratitude for “dodging a bullet” following a romantic breakup—offering a relatable perspective on trusting one’s instincts in love. Another standout moment is found in ‘Breaking Isn’t What a Heart Is For,’ where Hope’s voice takes on a soft quality as she reflects: “I knew it might get messy / When we both felt so intensely.” Filled with emotion and introspective, sincere lyrics, ‘Hope Handwritten’ serves as an overall uplifting work, celebrating the complexities of falling in and out of love and the journey to discovering one's inner strength amid the chaos.
