Deep Sea Diver has been a staple since they released their EP 'New Caves' in 2009, followed by their debut LP in 2012. The Seattle band now returns with their first album since 2020, the highly awaited Billboard Heart. Vocalist Jessica Dobson has collaborated with notable artists like Beck and The Shins. It feels as though the band never left, presenting an album that fans are sure to embrace.
The title track starts off powerfully, offering a grand and epic return that fans will definitely appreciate. The guitar work from Dobson and Elliot Jackson is exceptional throughout.
‘What Do I Know,’ driven by vigorous bass and drums, introduces Dobson’s vocals with punchy energy. Every member gets a chance to shine, with swirling guitars in the middle section and synths adding depth. Despite the complexity, it manages to strike the right balance of chaos.
‘Emergency’ begins with a riff that serves as a rallying call, energetic and vibrant, reminiscent of early 2000s acts. Its strong groove is hard to resist. As in other tracks, Dobson’s vocals maintain the momentum with considerable impact.
‘Loose Change’ offers a more minimalist approach, leaning towards indie-folk, featuring an acoustic sound and subdued vocals. It builds to a soaring middle section before concluding in a folk style. This showcases the band’s versatility, providing a moment of calm among the more dynamic sounds presented elsewhere. Meanwhile, ‘See In The Dark’ introduces a bluesy flavor with its opening riff.
‘Billboard Heart’ marks a significant return that will resonate deeply with Deep Sea Diver’s audience. The band is at their peak, delivering an adventurous and varied eleven tracks that highlight the songwriting and musicianship of Jessica Dobson and her collaborators. There is much to explore, featuring anthemic moments alongside tranquil sections that enhance the epic tracks. Dobson’s vocals and guitar playing are enthralling throughout, resulting in an album that remains engaging and full of energy from beginning to end.
