"It's an anthem for those who feel like outsiders..."
RUINS has made their return with a vibrant new single titled ‘Low Postcards’.
The duo from Liverpool – Lloyd Rock and Nik Kavanagh – blend simplistic pop with an authentic edge, creating heartfelt songwriting. After a brief hiatus, RUINS is back, and their latest single is among their finest work.
Released now, ‘Low Postcards’ sees the Liverpool group embracing a minimalist approach, centering around a three-chord synth pattern that serves as the basis for their lyrical content.
It’s a true gem, evoking memories of early Japanese Breakfast tracks or even the introspective synth sounds of New Order. Charming in its own way, ‘Low Postcards’ also pays homage to 90s trip-hop, with atmospheric production reminiscent of down-tempo icons like Zero 7.
In discussing the release, Nik shares, “The saying, ‘give me three chords and the truth,’ really laid the groundwork for ‘Low Postcards’. I began with a straightforward three-chord pattern on my synth, which is not my typical instrument, and it developed into something hypnotic and soulful. It evoked that classic 90s trip-hop vibe but with a unique ethereal twist. It serves as an anthem for the unheard outsider, rich in textures and authentic emotion that draws you in and keeps your attention.”
Lloyd adds, “The song explores fear: the fear of honesty; the fear of consequences; the fear of losing something vital; the fear of change. Fear is linked to anxiety; they share possible realities and exert significant influence on our decisions. I aimed to convey this tension. It’s intensely personal while being universally relatable, reflecting a common struggle we all face when choosing whether to reveal our truths or not.”
