In the fifteen years since Mike Hadreas debuted with his starkly minimalistic album ‘Learning,’ Perfume Genius has transformed into an extensive, semi-autobiographical art project, featuring a cast of characters with the same name, inspiring a contemporary dance performance, and culminating in the haunting orchestral elegance of ‘Glory.’ This time, he fully integrates longtime producer Blake Mills and his romantic and creative partner Alan Wyffels, resulting in his seventh studio album. This work combines Mike’s signature darkly poetic lyrics with a stirring instrumental build-up, ebbing and flowing between soft and loud, reflecting the record's exploration of introversion and extroversion—an ongoing struggle for him in the spotlight. Mike’s choice for deeper collaboration has led to what may be his most musically expansive album thus far, representing an effort to welcome outside influences. It highlights the constraints of the individual, yet still maintains Perfume Genius’ heartfelt storytelling. ‘Glory’ unfolds like a reserved invitation; a unique chance that warrants careful handling. He questions, “What do I gain from being established?” on the opening track, “I still retreat and hide when a man knocks at the door.” From this point, he pushes himself to grow, finding encouragement in Alan and Blake, as well as from within himself. This drive fuels the powerful intensity of ‘In A Row’ and the haunting reflective trauma of ‘Full On,’ leading to a suitably tender conclusion: the beautifully ambiguous realization that glory can also reside in stillness and shadows.
