As indicated by its title, 'IC-02 Bogotá' serves as a follow-up to 2018’s 'IC-01 Hanoi', continuing a series of instrumental works, this time recorded in Colombia's capital. It signifies a shift in style from Ruben Nielson’s characteristic soulful psych-funk into more relaxed sounds. Right from the beginning, it caters to crate diggers: the opening track ‘Earth 1’ is an expansive ten-plus minute piece where flute-infused, percussion-rich acid-jazz meets sultry ambient vibes. ‘Earth 2’ and ‘Earth 3’ launch into an interstellar celebration on a tropical moon, evoking the spirit of Bogotá’s own Meridian Brothers, with the former drawing upon cumbia and funk influences, and the latter blending into space jazz and nostalgic video game soundtracks from the Super Nintendo era. ‘Earth 5’ offers a vibrant mix of psychedelic cumbia and groove-focused disco, reminiscent of contemporary acts like Los Bitchos and Mauskovic Dance Band. The track ‘Heaven 7’ slows the tempo a bit, presenting a synth lullaby that feels like an ethereal journey through the universe. The ‘Underworld’ series revisits the groove-centric style, with occasional glimpses of Ruben’s signature riffs. While it strays from Unknown Mortal Orchestra's typical funk-driven ballads, 'IC-02 Bogotá' stands as a commendable sequel, with the potential to provide a blissful and mind-expanding exotic experience for one’s mind, body, and soul.
