An extensive four-disc exploration of Nick Drake’s iconic debut album ‘Five Leaves Left’ has been announced.
Released in the summer of 1969, the album showcased Nick Drake’s exceptional guitar skills alongside his emerging prowess as a songwriter. Despite its beautiful arrangements, the record did not achieve commercial success at the time, but it has since gained a devoted cult following.
Artists such as R.E.M. and Laura Marling, among others, have been enchanted by Nick Drake’s music. The limited nature of his discography—given that he passed away in 1974 with only three albums—has only added to the allure.
Titled ‘The Making Of Five Leaves Left,’ this project has been developed over nine years and offers a thorough examination of this legendary album. The original recordings produced by Joe Boyd have been revitalized, and the story behind the album will be shared alongside some remarkable extras, with many of these being released for the first time.
This authorized edition from the Nick Drake Estate is set to be released on July 25th through UMR/Island Records, featuring material from two new external sources as well as tracks uncovered during a comprehensive reorganization of the Universal tape library.
Notable items include Nick’s first session at Sound Techniques, sourced from a mono listening-reel that his close friend Beverley Martyn preserved over five decades ago. The box set also features the much-talked-about recordings made at Caius College by Cambridge acquaintance Paul de Rivaz, with the entire set being mastered by John Wood and Simon Heywood.
‘The Making Of Five Leaves Left’ will include a beautifully illustrated 60-page book, penned by Neil Storey in collaboration with Richard Morton-Jack—who authored the well-regarded biography The Life. This book offers new insights into the songwriter's brief yet artistically remarkable life.
