"Hackney is a hub of culture and creativity. From an early age, I was surrounded by so many talented individuals." Beyond music, what are the primary influences on your songwriting? We've heard you're a passionate sports enthusiast, and it seems those two interests might have a lot in common... Life, relationships, friends, and TV shows. Aside from music, I enjoy playing sports and I’m a fan of Eastenders (hehe). I appreciate the drama in Eastenders, and I suppose my songwriting often reflects the drama in my own life. Sports connect with music for me as they both serve as a way to release negative energy – I always feel better afterward. You’re about to hit the road later this year to support Jorja Smith on her tour! Having performed in various settings, from street busking to festival tents, how do you prepare for live shows? Do you have any specific rituals or routines? And what can audiences expect from a Mychelle performance once you’re on stage? Before a show, whenever possible, I like to do some form of exercise – it's my self-care time. In the dressing room, I often do karaoke and sing along to various songs while getting ready for the stage. It varies based on my mood that day. I avoid overthinking before going on stage to help manage nerves. On stage, expect… hopefully no mistakes! If you could collaborate with any musician from the past 20 years, who would it be (and why)? Ooh, that would definitely have to be Bob Marley. I can envision us in the studio, crafting a beautiful song together. Then we would go to the park, kick a ball around for a while, and later sit under a tree, singing the song we created. We’d look at each other and think: “Yep, we still love it – even after taking a break to play football.” Finally, if DIY is coming over for dinner – what would you prepare? I like this question. Recently, I got back from Spain and I’ve been really into making spinach and chickpeas, tomatoes, and empanadas. So that’s probably what I would make.
