If you aren’t familiar with spill tab yet, you will be soon.

Claire Chicha, performing under the name spill tab, will release her debut album ANGIE on May 16th via Because Music.

The French-Korean artist based in LA is a singer/songwriter and producer. After five years in the making, ANGIE emerges as a brilliant testament to spill tab’s creativity, playfulness, and experimentation. Collaborating with talents like Solomonophonic (Remi Wolf), Marinelli (FINNEAS), and John Hill (Charli XCX and Foals), ANGIE is a vibrant reflection of Chicha herself. Echoing her personal music influences, ANGIE is a delightful tribute to the essence of music-making.

ANGIE is an energetic record that still captures the precision of an artist who knows her craft well. Named after the song “Angie,” the album symbolizes Chicha’s continual growth as both a person and an artist. Having traveled across continents during her youth, she views music as her community, emphasizing collaboration as a core element of her artistry. This theme is evident in her debut album; the blend of identities and influences throughout the twelve tracks alludes to her varied background and former selves.

Following the distorted sounds of her 2023 EP Klepto and the electronic textures of her 2021 EP Bonnie, ANGIE represents a culmination of her artistic journey. From the eclectic vibes of “PINK LEMONADE” and the heartfelt quality of “wet veneer” to the expansive sonic landscapes of “by Design,” ANGIE transcends genres, forms, and styles, even incorporating French songs like “De Guerre” and “Assis.”

ANGIE is also the first project Chicha has created after leaving her previous record label, making the album independent from inception.

She expresses that this independence allowed her to eliminate distractions and create music that is purely experimental and free.

We had the opportunity to chat with Chicha prior to the album release, discussing her journey in music thus far and the creative process behind ANGIE.

      A CONVERSATION WITH SPILL TAB

Atwood Magazine: We’re just two weeks away from the album’s official release! How do you feel?

spill tab: I’m nervous. I definitely feel a bit anxious and just excited to share it. These last few days of preparation have been quite overwhelming, but I think that’s part of it, you know? I care a lot about it, and I want it to be received in the way I intended. But I understand that people will take from it what resonates with them. While I’m nervous, I’m also really excited.

How long did it take to create?

spill tab: Actively, I think about two years, but there are songs that date back to around 2020, so about five years in total.

This is such a dynamic album, showcasing various production techniques, vocal arrangements, songwriting styles, and even languages—can you share more about that process and how it reflects your creative style?

spill tab: The creation process was very collaborative, grounded in the desire to incorporate the diverse perspectives that these producers contributed. With so many people involved, I aimed to craft something that was both dynamic and unique, with each track feeling distinct while still maintaining a cohesive thread. I wanted the music to have a consistent voice that unifies it all into one world. I hope that comes through.

I believe it does! Regarding your earlier point about wanting people to interpret it as you envision, it can be hard for that to happen.

spill tab: Thank you! One of my main concerns was that the album might come off as disjointed or scattered, lacking a sense of cohesion. However, all the lyrics and experiences are mine, and I think it’s vital that it feels like it stems from one person. At the same time, I wanted to embrace my wide-ranging taste in music and allow that to shine through. So, while the album covers various styles, it still feels interconnected. I think that reflects how people consume music today; many artists proclaim their album demonstrates range, yet the songs often sound similar. This album genuinely sounds different.

You have some incredible collaborators on this album. Would you say collaboration is essential to your work?

spill tab: Absolutely. Collaboration is fundamental to what I do. Creating music alone can feel isolating. I admire artists who manage to do everything solo, and that’s
