Chilean DJ and producer Shanti Celeste has made her comeback with her second album, ‘Romance’, blending a variety of colors and emotions into the electronic music style for which she is becoming known. She is cultivating a community around her unique take on house, techno, and downtempo music, all while incorporating elements of pop. Based in Bristol, her latest release marks a significant step forward in her artistic journey.
Created in under a year and featuring Celeste's vocals prominently for the first time, the album begins with ‘Butterflies’, featuring Austrian-Ethiopian harpist Miriam Adefris. This captivating track is characterized by gentle drums, soothing synths, and strings reminiscent of Four Tet’s ‘Sixteen Oceans’. Following this, ‘Note To Self’, a collaboration with Batu, showcases the artist's signature classic club style infused with steel pan house and vibrant percussion.
‘Unwind’ reintroduces the beat in a more conventional manner with lively claps, uplifting rhythms, and manipulated vocals that draw the listeners in, leading into ‘Watching’, where she shines as a producer. As in her live performances, Shanti creates moments of breathability amid the album's more intense sections, a quality also found in ‘Thinking About You’. This track is both sophisticated and graceful, allowing her to explore a more dynamic range of sound through intricately crafted sonics.
Progressing further, the aptly titled ‘Light As A Feather’ embodies the spirit of ‘Romance’ with its exhilarating highs of love, ethereal synths, intimate vocals, and a delicate beat that encapsulates the album's essence. As the album nears its conclusion, Shanti Celeste brings back Adefris for ‘Medicine’, a captivating finale that features layered vocals, playful synths, and gated reverb drums, evoking a sense of Celeste's introspective thoughts.
With ‘Romance’ and its myriad intricacies, Shanti Celeste has maintained her foundational roots and further enhanced her already solid reputation. While there are serene moments that reveal a new side of the artist, the emphasis on high-energy tracks that propelled her to her current status remains strong. The work is more profound and crafted for human connection within the realm she has cultivated, resonating with themes of emotional and physical connection, movement, and shared experiences.
