Interview: Julia Wolf Discusses Challenging Expectations and Transforming 'Pressure' into Motivation - Atwood Magazine

Emerging alt-rock artist Julia Wolf shares her experiences with Atwood Magazine, discussing the highs and lows of the music industry, her fascination with vampires, and the inspirations behind her third LP, ‘PRESSURE.’

Listen to: ‘PRESSURE’ – Julia Wolf

For those who adore Twilight, Jennifer’s Body, and gothic literature, allow me to introduce you to Julia Wolf, your new favorite musician.

Just over a year ago, Wolf captured attention with "In My Room," a powerful alt-rock anthem that climbed to #1 on the Top 50 Viral Charts, winning the hearts of millions online. Now, she is making a significant return with her eagerly awaited third studio album, PRESSURE (released May 23rd through AWAL).

Unfiltered and fittingly named, PRESSURE delves deep into the darker aspects of Julia Wolf’s mind. The album fearlessly tackles issues such as body image, beauty norms, unreciprocated love, comparison, and the daunting expectations often imposed on women in the music scene. Tracks like “Jennifer’s Body” and “Girls” resonate strongly as Wolf navigates the complex and sometimes stigmatized emotions surrounding womanhood.

You know I’m for the girls

      But I don’t know what’s worse

      I think she’s so pretty,

I see all the ways I’m not

You know I’m for the girls

      But I don’t know what’s worse

      I think she’s so pretty,

hope she knows it’s not her fault

      – “Girls,” Julia Wolf

Wolf's journey to her current success, which includes opening for Halsey on their For My Last Trick Tour and accumulating over a million monthly Spotify listeners, is no small achievement. Growing up painfully shy, to the point of secluding herself in the school music room during lunch, the Long Island native often found it hard to connect with others. Time and again, music proved to be her solace, becoming a lifelong companion.

Though her journey has been far from straightforward, it has shaped her into the resilient artist she is now. With PRESSURE, Julia Wolf demonstrates that perhaps it isn't the absence of fear but rather its presence that can drive us forward.

      A CONVERSATION WITH JULIA WOLF

Atwood Magazine: Congratulations on PRESSURE! It’s an outstanding album, and I’m excited to dive into it with you. How are you feeling today? Have you had a chance to celebrate yet?

Julia Wolf: I definitely feel a release of tension! The anticipation has been intense; not knowing how people would react has been tough. But the outpouring of support has been incredible. I’m so grateful for all the love. I’m really proud of it, and I’m glad it’s out there. We haven’t had a chance to celebrate yet since it’s still early, but we plan to tonight!

Was there a specific song from the album that made you the most anxious to share?

Julia Wolf: Since “In My Room” was so successful, I think many expected me to continue in that vein. So, I wanted the album to start in a completely different direction. I was nervous about “Kill You Off” and “Pearl,” especially those genre-blending tracks. But so far, it seems to be going well!

Many people resonate with your music because you’re unafraid to voice your innermost thoughts. You vocalize the hard and subtle feelings loud and clear, which is refreshing. Where do you think this candidness in your songwriting stems from? Who are some of your songwriting inspirations?

Julia Wolf: A lot of it comes from my own wild and perhaps overly dramatic perspective on the situations I experience, feeling like it’s the end of the world often. Lyrically, my idol is Phoebe Bridgers—no one surpasses her. Ethel Cain is also amazing in her songwriting and storytelling. And Halsey as well. They are all so genuine. It’s comforting to hear fellow women express the same thoughts we all grapple with. I hope my music stays relatable, so I appreciate you saying that.

One track from the album, “Girls,” struck me deeply, particularly because its theme is rarely discussed in the music industry. There’s often a sense of shame or taboo surrounding feelings like comparison and envy. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic, if you’re comfortable.

Julia Wolf: Absolutely! I'm so in support of women. I feel that my entire audience is made up of girls who relate to what I’m going through. Comparison is something I struggle with constantly. Unfortunately, that's just part of this industry, where I'm always looking at others and seeing their beauty and talent, while they seem to be doing incredible things. With “Girls,” I express this odd feeling of
