Having recently unveiled details of her upcoming second album ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’ (set to release on August 8th), Florida-born cult favorite Ethel Cain has now shared the album's first preview, ‘Nettles’. The track is accompanied by a moody, atmospheric video exploring various liminal landscapes. This shimmering, eight-minute epic captures the emotional depth reminiscent of Bon Iver at his best. It also marks the beginning of the album’s main love story – the youthful romance between Cain (also known as Hayden Anhedönia) and her first love, Willoughby Tucker; this acts as a prequel to her 2022 debut album, ‘Preacher’s Daughter’. Regarding ‘Nettles’, she mentioned, “This song and the final track on the album were both written during the same week, the very first week I moved into the house in Alabama where I completed ‘Preacher’s Daughter’. Similar to ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ (especially ‘A House in Nebraska’ and ‘Strangers’), I unknowingly penned what became the beginning and end of the narrative. What initially started as small vignettes of the emotions I was experiencing at that time ultimately transformed into the foundational elements of a broader story. ‘Nettles’ expresses the dream of losing someone you love, seeking their assurance that won’t happen, and instead wishing for all the time you’ll share together as you age side by side. Occasionally, it feels good to shed the dark and simply allow love to exist.” Watch the ‘Nettles’ video here:
