Home transcends mere location; it embodies a feeling of comfort, security, and authenticity. In his latest single, “Home,” Mac DeMarco delves into the concept of home, which he describes as “a song I wrote at my home in Los Angeles about what home means to me.”
These days, I prefer my own company
No longer wandering those streets
That I used to call home
Because on every corner there are
Familiar faces and names
That remind me of memories
I’d rather let go of
Before I return home again.
Guitar – Mac DeMarco
Peace is subjective; it can be found in the smallest things, even in silence. In “Home,” DeMarco reflects on how what once felt like home can change and fade. However, a shift in a person’s “home” doesn’t mean they don’t have one. People move on, places evolve, but the essence of home remains timeless – a cozy blanket that offers warmth and security regardless of circumstances. Temporary experiences can serve as milestones to be appreciated from a distance, reminding us of their relevance. When faced with the past, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s merely a distant memory of our former selves. DeMarco finds balance as he separates himself from his past, embracing solitude away from what he once knew as home. It prompts the question: what does home signify for you?
I never reached out,
Letting our friendship fade away.
Now my welcome's worn thin,
And your resentment towards me has intensified
To the point where, when I attempt
To rectify all the falsehoods,
All those memories resurface,
Which I’d rather release
Before I return home again.
DeMarco's latest single comes before his upcoming album Guitar, set for release on August 22nd via his own Mac’s Record Label. The 12-track LP was entirely written and recorded by DeMarco in November 2024, with mastering done by David Ives. Be it mixing the album or filming music videos with a tripod, DeMarco continues to innovate independently. Fans can catch a glimpse of what’s ahead in the music video for “Home,” featuring DeMarco canoeing and showcasing various wildlife throughout the journey.
“I believe Guitar is a genuine reflection of where I currently am in my life,” DeMarco states. “I'm excited to share this music and look forward to performing these songs in as many places as I can.”

“Home” serves not just as a reflection but as a profound reckoning.
With gentle guitar work and sincere lyrics, Mac DeMarco unearths the nostalgia, comfort, and discomfort that shape our constantly evolving sense of belonging. He confronts the bittersweet reality that sometimes it is best to leave home behind. By stepping away, he discovers tranquility – not in reminiscence but in the present, in solitude, and in embracing new beginnings.
As he gears up to release Guitar and embark on a worldwide tour, DeMarco approaches this chapter with openness and confidence. “Home” encapsulates the heaviness of memories and the liberation of letting go – a heartfelt reflection on what we carry with us, and what we opt to leave in the past.
