Multi-talented South Londoner Kae Tempest, who previously concentrated on illustrating the intricate inner lives of others, now turns their gaze inward with 'Self-Titled.' This album is rich in personal introspection, despite its sonic inconsistencies.
Tempest’s journey of self-discovery and exploration of their gender identity is at the forefront of 'Self-Titled,' adorned with poetic motifs throughout. Tracks like 'I Stand On The Line' and 'Know Yourself' offer reassurance to their younger self with wit worthy of a Mercury Prize nomination. A standout piece, 'Breathe,' is a six-minute statement recorded in one take, inspired by new collaborator Fraser T. Smith, where Tempest skillfully combines previously disconnected themes, reiterating the line: “Be someone that the child I used to be could believe in / breathe in…” Their unwavering drive and determination lend a renewed intensity to familiar phrases.
When Tempest returns to spoken word, they exude confidence but leave listeners yearning for the previous depth of their delivery. Songs like 'Sunshine On Catford' and 'Everything All Together' allow the energy to wane, lacking further emotional exploration. The album’s instrumentation also varies; the energetic 'Diagnoses' features powerful, wailing synths, while the closing track 'Till Morning' utilizes somber muted trumpets and plucky guitar riffs. However, much of the album leans into a London-style orchestral rap sound, often falling short of the heights achieved in other works. Despite its musical inconsistency, 'Self-Titled' shines through Tempest’s sharp lyricism, making it hard not to be captivated by their next line.
