Damon Albarn Describes Bob Vylan’s Glastonbury Performance as a “Stunning Misfire”

Damon Albarn has labeled Bob Vylan's remarks at Glastonbury a “spectacular misfire.”

The rap-punk band performed on the West Holts Stage at the festival, just before the controversial Belfast trio Kneecap took the stage.

In front of a large audience, Bob Vylan's lead singer Bobby Vylan made several anti-Israeli statements, including leading a chant of “death, death to the IDF.”

Glastonbury organizers condemned the performance, while the BBC faced political backlash for not cutting the live-stream.

Bob Vylan appeared to slightly retract his comments during a surprise performance at the 100 Club in London, as the crowd began to chant those words again, only for the frontman to scold them.

In an interview with the Times, Damon Albarn, known for his work with Blur and Gorillaz, expressed his criticism but also maintained a calm perspective.

“It was one of the most spectacular misfires I’ve seen in my life,” Albarn stated. “Especially when he started to goose-step in tennis gear,” he added.

He went on to say, “I mean I’ve had my moments — not quite as catastrophic as that, but you do get caught up. The old testosterone gets you going. But it’s unfortunate. Everyone's just so hysterical.”

Albarn, with extensive experience on stage, can relate to the rush of adrenaline the band may have experienced. “I’ve been doing this for a very long time, and I still haven’t got any bloody answers. You want to express your beliefs and feelings, which is significant, but it comes with significant caveats. We learn as we go, or we don’t.”

“People get angry,” he continued, “and say foolish things due to poor communication. Therein lies the rub, as dear Shakespeare once said.”
