Green Day – Their Top 10 Songs

Green Day is an unstoppable force. From their DIY beginnings in the West Coast punk scene to their current global success, the band has remained committed to their values – crafting subversive pop-influenced punk with a keen societal insight, producing three decades of unforgettable tracks.

The Overjoyed are well aware of this. The Greek punk band has been long-time admirers, as their teenage years and beyond were dominated by the sounds of the Californian group.

Chosen to open for Green Day on their recent European tour, the band had the opportunity to meet their idols while performing in front of large audiences.

To commemorate this, The Overjoyed has selected 10 classic Green Day songs for Clash. “Green Day is the reason we are here today. Without them, we likely wouldn't exist as a band. They introduced us to punk, and we cherish every album, so creating this list was a challenge.”

“In honor of our new single ‘Rotten Love’ and our recent support for Green Day in Greece, we’ve made an attempt to compile our Top 10 Green Day songs. However, this was really not easy for us. For instance, we decided not to include ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ because we all believe it deserves its own separate list of the greatest songs ever written (See? I got in another song there…)”

      HOLIDAY

“‘Holiday’ was the first Green Day song I heard when I was 10, and it instantly inspired me to start a band. For me, it’s the perfect track in every way. They've ingeniously utilized a common chord progression and put their own spin on it. A memorable riff, great verses, an ideal chorus, and a solo and bridge that showcase the talents of each band member. And don't even get me started on the lyrics—I could discuss this song for hours…”

      BURNOUT

“The ideal opening track for an incredible album. Its straightforward verse and chorus catch you off-guard, and when I was a teenager, the lyrics hit me hard.”

      SCATTERED

“I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved this song (+The Grouch) haha—there’s another one snuck in! Both tracks had the power to lift my spirits whenever I blasted them on my mom's stereo or my old portable CD player.”

      LETTERBOMB

“It’s tough not to include every song from ‘American Idiot’ on this list. Strangely, ‘Letterbomb’ is the track I’ve played most frequently in recent years.”

      DILEMMA

“I was hesitant when ‘American Dream is Killing Me’ was released; it felt like a forced attempt to recapture the sound of the American Idiot/21ST Century Breakdown era. But then ‘Dilemma’ came out, and I thought, ‘Hell yeah.’

It resonated with me—the lyrics, the video, and the explosive chorus reminded me of my life with alcohol and drugs during the Covid and post-Covid years, a time when I faced a lot of mental struggles.”

      Stef (Guitar)

      MARIA

“I know this is an unexpected choice, but this song holds sentimental significance for me. In the past, my dad went to London for work and brought back the ‘International Superhits’ CD for his rocker son. The moment ‘Maria’ started playing (followed by Poprocks & Coke), I was hooked. It adds to the long list of incredible (and possibly overlooked) Green Day songs.”

      WELCOME TO PARADISE

“This is the essence of a Green Day banger. Pure energy from the start, catchy vocal lines throughout the verses and chorus, and THAT bass line in the bridge—just in case you were curious if it could get even better. Well, it can, and it does…”

      Thanos (Bass)

      LONGVIEW

“Well, this choice is expected from a bassist haha. ‘Longview’ was the track that inspired me to play bass from the very start instead of becoming just another guitarist! The day after I heard it, I bought a bass. I spent countless hours locked in my room, trying to master that melody. Once I finally nailed it, I was overjoyed and couldn’t help but jump around my room like a child!”

      STUART AND THE AVE.

“NOTHING can go wrong with this song!!! Honestly, the entire Insomniac album is just unbeatable. This is my favorite track from my favorite record! The bass throughout the album is phenomenal—pure artistry. Those melodies, that G3 tone, and Mike… he seems to be from another planet. He makes his bass growl and scream. As for that riff? It’s the kind of thing we all wish we could claim as our own.”

      CHRISTIE ROAD

“This song contains all my teenage memories—my entire school childhood. The rebellions, crushes, heartbreaks, and the first live shows of my teenage
