This self-titled album from the Welsh punk band Panic Shack can best be described as an enjoyable experience. It has firmly established its niche and navigates it with ease; the group's camaraderie is so palpable that it captivates, even when tracks like ‘Lazy’ and ‘Tit School’ risk falling into monotony. The album begins with ‘Girl Band Starter Pack,’ which features field recordings of the group at a bar before their performance, offering an excellent context to situate the songs within their specific setting. The highlights emerge when they take the ordinary and elevate it into something extraordinary: ‘Pockets’ is a lively critique of the countless pocketless women's clothing choices, while ‘We Need to Talk About Dennis’ delivers a brilliantly gritty post-punk groove about that one individual who pushes the boundaries of a celebration (“Order means nothing when you’re out with me”). Occasionally, the overly polished production undermines the songs, but for the most part, everything in ‘Panic Shack’ feels perfectly positioned. Framed by two tracks centered on friendship, this debut showcases its members as a crew that everyone will want to be part of.
