"If It’s Meant To Be, Then It Will Be: An Interview with NIMPH Creative Director and Designer Patty Maña"

Originating from the constant activity of Barcelona, NIMPH is redefining the world of upcycled fashion. With a goal of fostering a greener, community-driven eco-system, the independent label adopts a natural approach to production, repurposing deadstock fabrics, various objects, and local creativity. Consequently, each collection reveals a rugged aesthetic inspired by the brand’s woodland essence, weaving in folkloric traditions and pagan motifs throughout its designs.

Presenting its work through an annual runway-cum-performance piece, NIMPH embraces its role as a narrative weaver, transforming collections into concept-driven chapters. This season, the brand focuses on themes of spontaneity, chance, and fate, naming its seventh collection: ‘if it’s meant to be, then it will be’. By incorporating discarded materials, the collection captures a moment suspended between the past and present, embracing unconventional cuts—with untied straps, buttons sewn across collarbones, and relaxed layering. The movement is encapsulated in the brand’s airy, lightweight garments, contrasting tailored corsetry with bias-cut cotton and weighted jersey, serving as a counterpoint to the pull-tab chainmail of Chapter 06.

Since its inception in 2020, NIMPH has gained notable traction, especially through its collaboration with music icon FKA Twigs during her EUSEXUA Tour. Through a series of bespoke outfits, the brand established itself prominently, channeling the spirit of the avant-garde with standout pieces like the Bennet Hood and the heavy Momo Skirt and Sofia Belt.

To commemorate this milestone in NIMPH’s journey, CLASH engaged with founder Patty Maña to explore the brand’s origins, the significance of locally sourced production, and the steps toward cultivating a more supportive creative ecosystem.

Can you share the early beginnings of NIMPH – what inspired you to start your own label? What vision drives the brand?

NIMPH emerged as a canvas for my creativity, embodying my vision of a world where fashion is crafted with care—a realm where fashion is intertwined with emotion, intuition, environment, and narrative. It wasn’t something I planned intentionally; the idea blossomed during the peculiar days after COVID. The brand has evolved alongside me since then. From the outset, my vision has been to create something that resonates emotionally, visually, and ethically, allowing it to develop naturally, like a living entity.

What is the meaning behind the name ‘NIMPH’ – how did you choose it?

The name came to me instinctively. ‘NIMPH’ is inspired by mythological nymphs—mystical, ethereal women closely linked to nature and their inner worlds. They embody strength and wildness, yet are fluid and elusive. The Spanish word is “Ninfa,” so altering the ‘Y’ to an ‘I’ felt like a playful nod to my heritage. NIMPH began as an impulsive upcycling venture right after I came back from studying in London, as I set up a small studio at my grandparents’ house and began crafting pieces from what I could find. I shared them online, and… things began to flow from there, like a gentle wave.

You often draw on folklore and pagan symbolism in your designs—what influences those elements, and how do they factor into your creative process?

I’ve always been intrigued by the emotional and symbolic dimensions of things. Being a romantic, I cherish stories and rituals, and I seek out the everyday details that others might overlook. Growing up between the city and nature near Barcelona, I was enveloped in rich visual stimuli—from ornate architecture and ceramics to the textures of mountains, the sea, and wild flora. This blend significantly influenced my perspective and emotions.

My creative process often begins with revisiting my photo collection, as I gather many images. I collect found objects from the street, textures, outfits worn by strangers, drawings, and even bits of trash. Eventually, a mood or phrase brings everything together, resulting in chapter titles like Amore Hardcore from Chapter 04 or If it’s meant to be, then it will be for Chapter 07. From there, the visuals start to develop, guided by a few key symbols and words.

What motivated you to prioritize sustainability in your work?

For me, sustainability has never been an isolated concept in fashion; it has inherently been part of my understanding of creation. During my internships at Stella McCartney and Deborah Milner, I witnessed how fashion could embody both beauty and responsibility, which had a lasting impact on me. Caring about how things are made feels like a natural instinct for those who cherish the process and the people involved. It wasn’t a dramatic epiphany for me, just a quiet conviction that steadily grew stronger over time, and when the moment arrived, it was already a part of me.

In what ways does Chapter 7 connect with its home city of Barcelona?

The color palette, materials, and prints in Chapter 7 are heavily influenced by Barcelona. There’s
