Nick Cave Has Concluded That AI Might Be Acceptable, After All

Nick Cave Has Concluded That AI Might Be Acceptable, After All

Nick Cave has released a new video for his song ‘Tupelo,’ which incorporates AI technology.

This track is a quintessential Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds classic, and it notably turns 40 this week. To commemorate this occasion, Nick Cave has commissioned a new video directed by his frequent collaborator, Andrew Dominik.

The intriguing aspect? It employs AI.

The song juxtaposes the legend of Elvis Presley with the Old Testament, and the video brings the King to life in a surreal manner through AI programming.

This decision contrasts with the songwriter's previous remarks, where he expressed on the Red Hand Files that AI represents “a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human” and contributes to the “erosion of the world’s soul and the spirit of humanity itself.”

In a new message, Nick Cave has amended his stance, referring to the video as “a soulful, moving, and completely original retelling of ‘Tupelo,’ rich in myth and a heartfelt tribute to the great Elvis Presley.”

Dominik created AI-generated animated images of Elvis Presley, a creative choice that imparted “an uncanny quality, as if he had been resurrected, with the crucifixion-resurrection imagery at the end being both shocking and profoundly moving.”

He noted that he and his wife, Susie Cave, “were amazed. As I viewed Andrew’s surreal short film, I found my perspective on AI as an artistic tool softening. To some extent, my opinion was altered. ‘It’s a tool, like any other,’ Andrew remarked.”

So how does Nick Cave feel about this change of heart? Quite positively, in fact. “I believe that the ability to change one’s mind is the very definition of strength,” he stated. “We seek the truth wherever it leads us, remaining open and humble enough to revise our views as new information arises, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Ultimately, this reflects resilience, not weakness. Rigidity breaks; flexibility endures.”
