A new voice in shoegaze emerges...

In an instant, Wisp transformed from a relatively unknown artist to a frontrunner of the new shoegaze generation. At only 20 years old and still in her teens, the San Francisco songwriter must mature quickly. Her viral hit 'Your Face' and the following EP ‘Pandora’ were well-received, but her debut album ‘If Not Winter’ represents her most developed work to date. It intertwines captivating beauty with somberness, combining ethereal light with an intense, metal-influenced darkness that encapsulates a powerful creative presence.
Rich in depth, ‘If Not Winter’ functions both as a personal song cycle and a collection of musical sketches. The opening tracks ‘Sword’ and ‘Breathe Onto Me’ highlight her contrasting creativity—the former embodies dreamy pop while the latter draws inspiration from Deftones' heavy sound.
Overall, Wisp’s debut album maintains a cohesive flow. With a brisk 12 tracks, the standout moments arrive rapidly—such as the captivating ‘After Dark’ and the hauntingly gothic soundscapes of ‘Mesmerized.’
If her EP seemed somewhat immature, ‘If Not Winter’ feels far more assured. Each song is connected to her emotional experiences, showcasing a courage and authenticity in Wisp's artistry that is charming. ‘Serpentine’ may exemplify expertly crafted 90s guitar pop, yet the complexities of relationship dynamics depicted within are truly impactful.
Concluding with ‘Black Swan’—whose sharp sonic textures could rival those found in Mogwai’s compositions—and the soothing relief of ‘All I Need,’ this debut album exudes confidence, driven by a clear intention. If this signals the emergence of a new shoegaze wave, the legacy of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and others remains in capable hands.
8/10
