Quiet Houses is back with their new indie-pop anthem ‘mark/james’.

The project revolves around the friendship of Jamie Stewart and Hannah Elliot, who share every aspect of their lives with each other. Hailing from Edinburgh, this duo of dreamers created their manifesto during long bus rides to Glasgow, where they explored their favorite bands and found inspiration.

With backing from BBC Radio 1 and Spotify’s New Music Friday, their vibrant melodies and candid, bittersweet lyrics create an entertaining listening experience, drawing comparisons to the early works of Gracie Abrams and, at times, Wolf Alice.

Their latest single ‘mark/james’ reflects on their dating struggles while trying to settle down in East London. The song captures a life filled with superficial encounters, ghosting, and flirtation, culminating in a powerful chorus that conveys a sense of liberation.

Joining them on drums is Meg Lermeath, as Quiet Houses strives for a live sound on the record, merging their catchy melodic style with the energetic elements of their performances.

      The duo shares…

“‘mark/james’ is dedicated to all our brave sisters and brothers navigating the dating scene in London. It’s about dealing with casual relationships in a world of £7 pints and sharing flats with eight people. We composed it in our first London flat in Walthamstow during summer while balancing full-time hospitality jobs and squeezing in music-making whenever we could find the time.”

“The guitar loop and drum machine were our initial inspirations that got us thrilled, feeling playful, flirty, and lighthearted; the lyrics followed soon after. When the melody is fast-paced, it allows for a rich narrative. The drums were played by Meg Learmonth; we recorded them while slowing the track down by 40% and then sped it back up for those sharp transients. Chris Rabbits re-recorded the original bass line, incorporating some fun fills.”
