On her debut album ‘I Am The Dog’, Sir Chloe’s Dana Foote blended ‘90s rock influences with her penchant for the unusual; these tracks often evoke a ‘huh’ moment, much like the album cover where she is seen embracing a sheep. Now, two years later, ‘Swallow The Knife’ largely maintains that distinctive indie-rock vibe, showcasing everything from the Pixies-influenced ‘Complicated’ to the soothing, emotionally charged ‘Eyes’, while remaining comfortably within her established style yet still providing a variety of sounds. Dana’s notable strength lies in her vocal range, particularly her lower register which conveys deep emotion: for instance, in ‘Passenger’, her delivery adeptly channels pain in sync with the track's melancholic sound. Even better, ‘Kiss’ exudes fury, with a gritty riff complemented by an infectious chorus and an impressive concluding refrain: “I don’t want love / I want revenge.” However, some parts are a bit uneven: the opener ‘The Hole’ plays with dynamics and flirts with grunge, while ‘Take It’ showcases spoken word without veering into awkwardness; ‘Forget It’ alludes to darkness but falls short in delivering a stronger bass line—a shortcoming that ‘Holy’ exemplifies, as it ends up being a rather forgettable track. It leans a bit safe in some areas, yet it still marks a pleasing return.
