The Queen of Afrobeats, Tiwa Savage, makes her much-awaited comeback with her fifth studio album, which intriguingly presents a sound that diverges from her fan-given title. 'This Time It’s Personal' lives up to its name, embracing intimate lyricism that also serves as a declaration of purpose. Her bold and captivating style highlights her versatility across genres at her discretion.
The album opens with a powerful ballad, 'I’m Done,' signaling a dive into R&B with its classically rich vocals. Transitioning into 'Angel Dust,' the rhythm shifts as Tiwa employs fluid production reminiscent of early Brandy tracks.
Next comes the previously released single 'You4Me,' built on a familiar Tamia sample, cleverly woven into the hook of 'So Into You,' showcasing a nod to RnB pioneers—she makes it uniquely hers. Elements of her West African roots come through in this track, where the lively afrobeat drums complement a dreamy vocal delivery. In a similar vein, 'On The Low' stands out as a seductive powerhouse featuring fellow Nigerian star Skepta. With four tracks in, we're embarking on an emotional exploration of love's complexities.
Additional influences materialize in 'Holding It Down,' which channels Irv Gotti's chords from Ashanti's 'Movies', while 'Twisted' incorporates elements from Marvin Gaye’s 'Sexual Healing.' The album feels like a tribute to her R&B influences from her youth, and with her unique persona, she lays it all out.
Noteworthy highlights include '10%', where the saxophone and acid jazz instrumentation come together, enhanced by Tiwa Savage's deep voice, evoking the ambiance of a cozy lounge. Another unique track, 'Scared Of Love,' delivers a raw, stripped-back bedroom pop vibe. Meanwhile, 'Addicted' quickly captivates, featuring a back-and-forth narrative of intoxicating love between Tiwa and Taves.
The 15-track album begins to close with 'You’re Not The First (You’re Just The Worst),' which combines the feel of a Christmas song with a diss track, as the lyrics contrast with the sweet vocals—Tiwa exhibits empowerment and confidence. The outro features James Flauntleroy and presents an unexpectedly upbeat tempo; their harmonization leads into an impressive harpejji solo.
Ultimately, the project satisfies, delivering something distinct from 'Celia' and 'Once Upon A Time.' While some tracks may blur into the background, yielding a slightly less impactful presence against the hallmark track selection, this is a minor issue. Beyond the singles, there are numerous other engaging pieces. 'This Time It’s Personal' offers a sincere and reflective take on the highs and lows of love, intimacy, and relationships, providing a smooth listening experience that blends entertainment, reflection, and maturity.
