Sydney Minsky Sargeant's debut solo album may showcase one of the most significant shifts in an artist's approach this year. The frontman of the dark electronica band Working Men’s Club has traded their dense synths, along with his recent supergroup project, Demise of Love, for acoustic guitars and a considerable amount of introspection. Some tracks on ‘Lunga’ are from Sydney's teenage years in Todmorden, but it seems he has only recently, at age 24, gained the clarity necessary to infuse them with a sense of maturity. The music is minimal, primarily featuring guitar and piano, with occasional dreamy electronic touches, especially prominent in standout tracks like ‘Summer Song’ and the beautiful ‘Hazel Eyes.’ Stylistically, he draws comparisons to artists like Nick Drake and Bert Jansch. While Sydney has a knack for creating a rich atmosphere with a limited instrumental range, he still has room for growth in his lyricism; some lines come across as charmingly raw, while others verge on clichéd, potentially lacking the distinctiveness that gives his lyrics in Working Men’s Club such intensity. Nevertheless, ‘Lunga’ exhibits a commendable boldness, showcasing a confident and sometimes loose-tongued frontman lowering his defenses to explore his vulnerability. This suggests a promising journey ahead.
