HO99O9 - Mañana Escapamos

Describing ‘Tomorrow We Escape’ as intense is undoubtedly stating the obvious, as HO99O9's identity—a mosaic of influences from hardcore, punk, industrial, hip hop, and more—has been firmly established over the course of three albums and numerous exhilarating live performances. This third release is exceptionally well-structured, with its unexpected twists and frequent 180-degree shifts in sound, which somehow intensifies the band's already passionate energy. For instance, the dreamy, ‘Space Oddity’-like track ‘Immortal’ features a guest appearance from Chelsea Wolfe, whose hypnotically gentle vocals blend with the equally ethereal soundscape. This is juxtaposed with the fast-paced ‘Tapeworm,’ where The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato delivers clichéd lines with such a deadpan style that it shifts from mere imitation to a genuine tribute. Following this, ‘LA Riots’ features riffs as sharp as its lyrics (“How you gonna take all of us / You know we ain’t giving up”), amplifying its silence. Likewise, the daydreamy ‘Psychic Jumper’ follows ‘OK, I’m Reloaded,’ where an industrial beat meshes with a chaotic metallic loop, creating an atmosphere that feels like a blend of moshpit exuberance and the aggressive vibes similar to Sleigh Bells’ debut following the rise of 100 gecs. The most straightforward track here, ‘Incline,’ features TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek providing a funky foundation for collaborators like Nova Twins, Pink Siifu, and Yung Skrrt, with a shuffled beat and vocal effects that flirt with contemporary trends. However, it’s the track ‘Godflesh’ that ultimately crowns ‘Tomorrow We Escape’ in an outstanding way; a colossal piece that’s rhythmically perfect for the moshpit, balancing loud and slightly softer elements, culminating in a breathtakingly chaotic and deeply cathartic finale.
