Roundtable: An Examination of Not for Radio’s ‘Melt’ - Atwood Magazine

Atwood Magazine's contributors delve into María Zardoya's debut solo album as Not for Radio, titled ‘Melt’ – a captivating, emotionally charged examination of grief, desire, and creative renewal. They explore her embrace of gothic romanticism and lush, intimate minimalistic arrangements as she evolves her artistic identity from The Marías into something distinct and beautifully personal.

Featured contributors include Atwood writers Jada Moore, Jake Fewx, and Ashley Littlefield!

To begin, how do you relate to María Zardoya and The Marías' music?

Jada Moore: The Marias have been part of my music playlist since around 2017. As a teenager, I was completely captivated by the group, especially Maria's enchanting and airy vocals, and I've been a fan ever since!

Jake Fewx: I have to admit, aside from a few songs here and there, I haven't explored The Marias extensively! My introduction to them was through their feature on Tainy’s 2023 album, Data (which is phenomenal). I've observed their rise to success, which made Melt highly anticipated for me this year; however, I can’t consider myself a true fan. Not For Radio sparked my interest, and it definitely didn't let me down!

Ashley Littlefield: I first encountered the name in 2017, but I hadn’t taken the time to listen closely until now. It’s fascinating to discover new music and learn about various artists and what makes their sound unique.

What are your first impressions and reactions to Melt?

Jada: Upon listening to the album, my first thought was, “this completely feels like a María Zardoya album.” She infused her core essence and spirit characteristic of a Marías' song, transforming it into something uniquely hers. The strong instrumentation complements her vocals beautifully, creating a serene listening experience.

Jake: I’m struck by how quickly the album engaged me. Maria's vocal performances are outstanding. My initial listen evoked a deep sense of melancholy, like being sedated and watching the world slow down, which felt captivating. Many of the instrumentals have a crisp, nostalgic quality that adds depth to the songwriting. The thought and care that has gone into this album are evident, making it perfect for an emotional release.

Ashley: Melodic and entrancing, María’s vocals remind me of Alina Baraz’s soothing, airy sound. The instrumental choices draw inspiration from classical music, soothing the spirit like jazz, while the percussion elements guide the album, particularly in “Moment” and “Back To You,” blending seamlessly together.

How does this album compare to The Marías’ releases – what are the main similarities or differences?

Jada: There's certainly a resemblance in the overall feel of a The Marías’ album, but Zardoya distinguishes herself by being the sole focus and voice in each track (unlike group projects where male backing adds another layer).

Jake: Unfortunately, I can’t comment much on the group's past.

Ashley: The Marías’ albums utilize layered instruments and blended effects to enhance their background sounds, uplifting the essence of their lyrics. In contrast, Melt has a more minimalistic sound; the subtle production differences tug at the heartstrings and emphasize the meaning behind each track.

Melt’s creation has been described as “an alchemy of grief, solitude, and creative communion,” with the album described as “gothic romanticism, filled with intimate, psychedelic ballads that embody love’s decay reborn into sound.” Does this capture the spirit of these songs, and where do you sense or feel it most?

Jada: This description perfectly encapsulates the overall atmosphere of the project. A haunting sense of longing, pain, and loneliness permeates the album. The timing of its release aligns with a season of longing and melancholy. “My Turn” particularly reflects the album's theme – its lyrics are filled with pain and resentment. Meanwhile, “Melt” captures a romantic moment with lyrics longing for a love that may never be reciprocated.

Jake: This sentiment truly captures the essence of Melt. Even in its most whimsical moments, Zardoya has a way of either alluring you or breaking your heart. Her vocal performances evoke longing while remaining intimate, and there’s often an element of disassociation in the music, which softens the emotional weight of the lyrics.

“Puddles” is a remarkable opening track; beneath its sultry, dream-like exterior lies a tale of infatuation. The sound is vibrant and enticing, making you wish to savor every part of it. The album succeeds in portraying the complex emotions of sadness and the desire for connection through this kind of juxtaposition.

Ashley: “Swan” embodies that gothic romantic spirit, transporting the listener into a new realm of grief and solitude while fostering connection. The production and lyrics are exceptional, with the gentle
