Manchester musician Mani has passed away.
The bass player, whose real name was Gary Mounfield, reportedly collapsed at home, prompting a call for an ambulance shortly thereafter. Despite medical efforts, he could not be revived; Mani was 63 years old.
His brother Greg confirmed the news on Facebook, sharing, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. Gary Mani Mounfield RIP.”
He later added: “Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”
Mani was known as one of the most vibrant figures in UK music, truly embodying the essence of bass. As a vital part of The Stone Roses, his sensitivity to various musical styles greatly contributed to their creative output.
While his lively personality endeared him to fans, it's important to recognize Mani's technical prowess – he could masterfully play funk, dub, or rock, choosing to use his fingers instead of a pick.
Remaining with The Stone Roses throughout their journey, he later joined Primal Scream, who were also experiencing a transformative phase. Mani’s contributions to their 2000 album ‘XTRMNTR’ are cherished by many fans as the band’s pinnacle, characterized by its bass-heavy and electronic-infused sound.
When The Stone Roses reemerged, Mani was central to their heartfelt second chapter, serving as a bridge between fans and the Manchester legends.
After this period ended, Mani devoted time to caring for his wife Imelda, who passed away two years ago.
A powerful presence in British music, he will be greatly missed – rest in power.
