A single word served as the guiding influence for Mei Ehara's artistic journey and her introspective and revealing album, ‘All About McGuffin.’
Stream: ‘All About McGuffin’ – Mei Ehara
For many years, Mei Ehara bore the burden of self-imposed expectations: creative insecurities, unfinished songs, and the persistent question of whether she was creating as she was intended to.
While working on her latest album, clarity began to coalesce around one word – McGuffin – which ultimately became the title of All About McGuffin.
Though it originates from film terminology, for the Japanese singer/songwriter, it reflected her past few years – the challenges, risks, and achievements that went unnoticed. This realization transformed the album from a mere collection of tracks into a narrative about discovering and pursuing her true path.

‘Happiness, for me, has always been pursuing what you love,’ Ehara shares. ‘I view this album as a narrative, and the McGuffin felt like a fitting way to encapsulate that journey. I hope listeners will experience it in its entirety, feeling the connection that binds it all together.’
Although it was a challenging endeavor, it seems to have been worthwhile. Re-examining songs she'd set aside for years, like “Mada Hayai Kudamono,” and developing the “Opening Theme” early in the process helped her establish the album's emotional trajectory.
Then came her first U.S. tour, supporting Faye Webster and performing at venues she had never imagined – from cozy stages to the grandeur of Radio City Music Hall. The experience was surreal and uplifting, broadening her understanding of her potential as an artist.
As she prepares for her first U.S. headlining tour, Ehara is eager to connect with the fans who have supported her music from afar and to see how this experience will influence her next project.
Atwood Magazine conversed with Mei Ehara about McGuffin, relinquishing pressure, and the evolution of her creative process that led her to this pivotal moment.

A CONVERSATION WITH MEI EHARA
Atwood Magazine: The title of your new album, All About McGuffin, is quite captivating. What attracted you to the idea of a “McGuffin,” and how did that influence the album's themes?
Mei Ehara: There are multiple reasons I chose the word McGuffin. It relates to both my musical decisions in arranging the songs and my personal experiences – everything I've confronted, worked through, and processed over the last few years. Looking back on my life and the album creation process, I feel this word encapsulates the lessons and growth I've experienced during that period.
I perceive this album as a cohesive story, which is why I want listeners to enjoy it from beginning to end. In narrative terms, the concept of the McGuffin – a filmmaking term – perfectly represented what I aimed to convey.
You mentioned this record is about releasing expectations and perfectionism. When did you realize you needed to create without fear this time?
Mei Ehara: Once I started working on the album, I understood that what mattered most was letting go of the anxieties, pressures, and rigid notions I had been holding onto. Allowing myself to create in the way I sincerely wanted to was a crucial part of the journey.
You’re about to kick off your first headlining tour in the U.S.! What does it feel like to take your music on tour in America under your own name?
Mei Ehara: I honestly never imagined I would perform outside of Asia in my life, so playing in the U.S., so far from Japan, is incredibly thrilling. I'm also eager to see the types of people who resonate with my music, to witness how they experience it, and to meet them in person.
It's truly a privilege to perform for fans, and I believe this tour will provide me with fresh insights on how I want to approach live shows in the future. That prospect excites me greatly.
Your journey has included opening for Faye Webster across the U.S., even performing at Radio City Music Hall. What did you learn from that experience?
Mei Ehara: Joining Faye’s tour made me aware of the distinct approaches to sound taken by people in Japan and the U.S. Whether in recording or live sound engineering, the mindsets and techniques are exceptionally different. Opening for her inspired me to collaborate with a broader range of individuals and to expose myself to diverse perspectives on sound and music creation.
