Chelsea Tolhurst and Grace Bontoft of Debdepan have been close friends since they were 11, creating a natural synergy on ‘Lovers & Others’. This EP was crafted after the pair moved to the creative coastal town of Margate, delving into themes of love, identity, and friendship, with lyrics that are both candid and vulnerable.
‘Lovers & Others’ presents a more dancefloor-oriented sound compared to their earlier EP ‘OMEN’, evoking the dance-punk of the early 2000s alongside the new rave that followed a few years later, as well as elements of grunge and industrial music. While the influences are familiar, Debdepan's unique combination sets their sound apart.
From the outset with the opener ‘The Girl’, it’s evident that this EP promises an exciting experience, blending grunge with dance in a way that captivates immediately. This is succeeded by ‘Oh No’, which offers a more subdued vibe and showcases the duo’s exploration of a darker wave sound.
This release maintains engagement throughout; each turn reveals something new or refreshing. “If being more enigmatic makes you happy, fucking tragic,” they express in the haunting lead single ‘Habit’, which has an almost Gaga-like quality, before ‘Blue’ shifts to a more serious mood. ‘Ghost’ starts similarly, presenting a stark contrast between the somber verses addressing relationship changes and the explosive, cathartic chorus.
Throughout the five tracks of the EP, Debdepan seamlessly blends various genres. It feels as though the duo has truly discovered their own distinctive sound, merging their diverse influences into a cohesive signature style.
