On a muggy mid-week morning, Erin LeCount took a call inside a shed decorated with artificial sunflowers and flowing curtains. “It's falling apart. The flowers are to prevent the sap from the wood!” she exclaims. Being a self-identified Essex girl, we immediately delved into her identity. “I bleach my hair a lot,” she reminisces about her roots. “I had a really strong Essex accent… As I sang more, I almost lost it, which I regret. I used to tell everyone I was from London.”
When discussing how she weaves elements of her background into her music, LeCount is happily reflective. “I learned about Essex’s history, the culture of working-class individuals, post-war Essex, and how much of the misogyny in Essex traces back to the Witch Trials,” she shares excitedly. “Singing about my upbringing significantly influences my lyrics and visuals; the heavy glitter, the walks home after nights out. These are all crucial, formative moments for me.”
This momentary innocence, and the experience of walking home at night often with your own heartbeat echoing, shapes her latest single ‘808 HYMN’. It can be found in the lyric, “when I was young, I thought the moon was walking me home,” and in the naivety that, with hindsight, feels haunting beside reality. “I wrote the song about the transition that occurs when you’re younger and have this idealistic perception of the world, where the moon seems to follow you home and you feel somewhat safe, to the moment that shifts and you understand the harsh realities of the world,” Erin clarifies.
LeCount’s skill is profound, further evident in her partnership with producer James Jacob. Together, they co-created ‘Inter Alia’ for the National Theatre. The play centers around a London Crown Court judge, Jessica Parks (portrayed by Rosamund Pike), as she navigates the judicial system. “I received the script from Justin (Martin) who directed it, and Suzie (Miller) who wrote it,” she states, “I’ve never had such a strong reaction to a script. It took me a two-hour walk to process it. It was the most intense experience I've ever had. Collaborating with a team helped me step outside of my own thoughts. I was captivated by the different responses to the music and how it varied from night to night.”
LeCount’s next project is far from solitary, as she plans to go on a North American tour. “I’m both anxious and thrilled. I’m so thankful to be performing in these intimate venues with such kind and genuine people. I’m eager to create these safe spaces in America.”
