PLTFRM: Saiming

Following several inactive years, UK rap experienced a resurgence in 2025 as the underground scene gained mainstream attention. Artists like Len, Lancey Foux, and Fimiguerrero were instrumental in this revival during the early 2020s, while Jim Legxacy's ‘black british music’ received critical acclaim, and EsDeeKid leveraged his viral fame just as 2025 was concluding.

Parallel to this emerging group is a subgenre informally referred to as ‘mellow grime’. There’s notable overlap between both groups, largely due to a fresh wave of exceptional producers; BexBlu and Afrosurrealist have played a key role in bridging this divide, with one standout rapper, Saiming, making a significant impact.

“There’s a growing scene developing around me and some of the other artists,” he tells CLASH. “Talents like Namesbliss, Paul Stephan, and Pozzy are all creating similar music, and it’s beginning to gain traction, but honestly, I wasn’t sure how I would fit in.”

Saiming, who is both reserved yet quietly confident, grew up in Herne Hill, South London. Though he didn’t come from a musical family, his parents met in a jazz bar, sparking his interest in music from a young age. Having missed the initial wave of grime, he observed the genre’s revival in the mid-2010s as well as the rise of the UK drill scene. While he acknowledges early influences like Skepta and Jme, he also values the subsequent alternative UK rap movement, expressing admiration for artists like Knucks, Ayrtn, and the pioneering group House of Pharaohs.

These inspirations are evident in Saiming’s music, delivered in a more contemplative, melancholic tone. His flow feels conversational without being preachy, and while grime is reflected in his tempo, his production choices reveal a broader musicality. Even though classic grime instrumentals remain timeless, Saiming and his collaborators prefer a fuller, less electronic sound, utilizing samples. “Grime definitely shapes much of our music, but you might hear some of our work and think it doesn’t quite fit the grime label. ‘Mellow grime’ is not a perfect term, but I don't think any label truly is,” he explains.

With soulful production backing him, Saiming has broadened his lyrical range since he first entered the scene in 2019. His EP from last year, ‘what’s the alternative?’, tackled political themes while maintaining an introspective focus. Tracks like ‘duck duck goose’ and ‘2 lungs’ showcase his artistic growth, merging lush soundscapes with a reflective, conscious viewpoint. “Much of that project has a somber tone, expressing my feelings of helplessness. The political and economic climate feels overwhelming. ‘What’s The Alternative?’ poses an open question; I don’t have the answers, so it’s more about the journey.”

Towards the end of 2025, Saiming collaborated with BexBlu and punk poet Finn Foxell for a mini EP titled ‘give thanks and breathe’. Each artist brings unique elements to the project, with BexBlu providing rich, jazz-influenced production, Foxell revisiting his earlier style while also exploring punk and indie influences, and Saiming demonstrating his versatility. The standout track ‘tame my vices’ highlights their natural chemistry, blending bold lyrics with a trumpet-rich backdrop.

Discussing how the project came to be, Saiming expresses his respect for Foxell and emphasizes the importance of the studio as an essential space for artists. “Finn brings a grateful, optimistic, and authentic delivery to the project,” he notes. “He has mantras he repeats to keep himself motivated and on track. I think I contribute a similar energy, although perhaps with less optimism. The studio sessions were incredibly enjoyable. We need more of that: engaging conversations, surrounding ourselves with good people, and creating art.”

Saiming’s perspective and values are striking, particularly his clear vision for the future, drawing inspiration from the longevity and adaptability of rap legends. “André 3000 is playing the flute, and Freddie Gibbs is growing older and making music for an older demographic. While that’s not what I’m focused on right now, I imagine I’ll still be rapping when I’m Freddie Gibbs’ age. At that time, I’ll be rapping about different topics,” he continues.

His recent work indicates a promising trajectory for a long and successful career. There has been noticeable evolution in his sound and lyrics since he was 19. His worldview is profoundly compassionate, and if the early stages of his musical journey are any indication, he is fully committed to growth and development. “I hope to completely sustain myself through music, and anything else will just be a minor detail we’ll sort out later. I have much yet to learn.”
