American artist McKinley Dixon is set to release his new album ‘Magic, Alive!’ later this year.
A skilled lyricist rooted in rap, he draws inspiration from a wide range of musical and literary sources. Fully conscious of the social significance music holds, his 2021 breakout album ‘For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her’ and the 2023 follow-up ‘Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?’ showcase a distinct individuality.
The new album ‘Magic, Alive!’ will be available on June 6th, accompanied by a brief UK tour in Autumn, including a performance at London’s the Lexington on October 21st.
From the upcoming LP, the new single ‘Sugar Water’ features guest verses from Quelle Chris and the soothing vocals of songwriter Anjimile. In the track, McKinley Dixon raps: “I guess if it don’t kill you, make you harder / Bring him back just for my heart? / Shit, it seem an easy barter.”
Dixon describes ‘Sugar Water’ as a reflection on how to make ephemeral moments endure, and how to keep the memory of those who are no longer present alive through time and space. It poses the question: ‘what is the cost of an eternal life remembered through others' memories?’
