An eclectic and thorough debut from the indie-folk duo...
Indie-folk pair lilo have crafted a solid reputation through a series of EPs, taking their time to create their debut album 'Blood Ties.' Childhood friends Christie Gardner and Helen Dixon share a musical connection and intimacy that is evident in their work.
‘Crash The Car’ starts with a subdued tone, featuring just vocals and guitars, reminiscent of Big Thief and Adrianne Lenker. Even in its quiet opening, there is a sense of beauty. However, it transforms into a much more dynamic piece in the second half, becoming soaring and intense. The duo successfully balances the calming introduction with the more forceful moments that follow.
‘Cycling’ marks a shift towards a more recognizable indie sound, incorporating electric guitars. Their harmonies are perfectly blended, giving their music an accomplished quality that belies the fact that this is their debut LP. As with other songs on the album, the lyrics are deeply personal, showcasing the duo’s talent for storytelling.
This quality is further highlighted in ‘Used To Be,’ which again features a focus on vocals accompanied by gentle background sounds. The raw emotion and vulnerability displayed here are striking. Gradually, additional elements emerge, introducing almost jazz-like sounds with beautiful strings and horns. It stands out as one of the album's most impressive tracks, captivating from start to finish. Other softer songs like ‘Leo’ evoke similar feelings and demonstrate how comfortable the pair is working together.
‘Better Conversation’ brings a shift in energy, highlighting their ability to transition effortlessly between lively tracks and more minimalist compositions. ‘Nevada’ continues this trend, adopting a sound reminiscent of First Aid Kit.
With their debut LP, lilo has firmly established themselves as a group to watch. While there are hints of Big Thief, The Staves, and First Aid Kit in their sound, they carve out a distinct niche that beautifully balances intimate, subdued beauty with more adventurous elements, all while showcasing their heavenly harmonies. There is much to explore within the personal lyrics and varied styles found throughout the ten tracks. This album promises to reward repeated listens and demonstrates a maturity beyond their years. It will be thrilling to see where their sound evolves next.
