English guitarist Mick Ralphs has passed away.
The musician was integral to not just one but two iconic bands, having played crucial roles in both Mott the Hoople and Bad Company. Mick Ralphs contributed significantly to the expansion and definition of English rock music, but he suffered a stroke shortly after performing at the O2 Arena in 2016 with Bad Company.
He died earlier this week due to complications from his stroke, having been bedridden for nearly a decade.
“Our Mick has departed, and my heart has broken,” said Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers in a statement. “He has left us with incredible songs and memories. He was my friend, my songwriting collaborator, a remarkable and versatile guitarist with the best sense of humor.”
Born and raised in Herefordshire, Mick Ralphs came of age during the British blues movement, co-founding the Doc Thomas Group, which later became Mott the Hoople.
Contemporary Paul Rodgers left Free, and together they formed Bad Company, alongside Free drummer Simon Kirke and former King Crimson bassist and vocalist Boz Burrell.
A superb guitarist whose technical skill complemented his inquisitive lyricism, Mick Ralphs penned the 1970 hit ‘Ready for Love’ for Mott the Hoople, which would later be adapted for Bad Company’s debut album.
