With musician parents, RUBII naturally gravitated towards music, her earliest memory of a live performance being her father playing the classic jazz piece ‘Take Five’ with his band. Raised in Birmingham, RUBII first caught attention with her breakout single ‘Jammin’, included in her 2023 EP ‘Olive Green’. The positive response to her self-described ‘bitter chill’ style set the stage for her next EP, ‘Change & Remain’ — a blend of lo-fi soundscapes infused with elements of soulful jazz and hip-hop. This release marked her emergence as one of the UK’s promising stars last year.
So, what does ‘bitter chill’ mean? RUBII explains, “It captures the essence of my music. Lyrically, many of my songs carry a bitter tone presented in the most relaxed manner. It reflects my vexation while maintaining a sense of calm.” This contrast is fitting, especially as RUBII often breaks the norms, carving her own unique path. Her distinct approach of moving between mellow rap and light, airy vocals maintains a coherent contrast; her flow feels natural, with lyrics that are both relatable and soulful.
Her journey into music began in childhood with lyric writing, learning the violin as her first instrument, and singing in a choir, leading to her officially creating music with her band at age 16. During the early stages of her solo career, she was inspired by lo-fi beats, while her passion for jazz and hip-hop naturally contributed to the depth of her sound. Reflecting on her influences, she notes, “I was also listening to a lot of Tom Misch and IAMDDB, and in hindsight, that makes so much sense regarding my sound.”
RUBII reveals that her favorite track is undoubtedly ‘Jealousy’. Allowing herself the freedom to express her thoughts through it was liberating, creating a comfortable space to produce some of her best work. Although she held on to the song for two years, she continually revisited it before finally releasing it in January.
This year, RUBII released two singles, ‘Twin Flame’ and ‘Keep Hush’ in collaboration with Amaria BB, exploring new Brazilian-inspired rhythms. Additionally, she achieved a goal by performing at one of her dream festivals, Cross The Tracks. Looking ahead to the rest of 2025, RUBII is set to release another project by the end of summer, along with numerous shows that she will announce soon. Keep her name in mind.
