Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin's life impacted countless individuals.

In the realm of British music, the Mercury Prize holds significant prestige. While the BRITs dominate the commercial music scene, the Mercury Prize celebrates broader, album-oriented creations. Therefore, CLASH eagerly made its way from pre-event interviews to the Eventim Apollo to see black midi – the band’s exhilarating and genre-defying debut album ‘Schlagenheim’ was shortlisted in 2019, and their live performances we've attended showcased remarkable technical skill and an unapologetic bravado.

When they chose to perform ‘bmbmbm’, the excitement in the venue escalated, climaxing with Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin’s now-iconic front flip – a bizarre and audacious stunt that had the entire audience gasping.

But this was black midi and Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin. At such a young age, their unwavering dedication to their craft was astonishing. On paper, their music might have devolved into a simple display of technical prowess typical of math or prog rock. The fact that it transcended into something truly magical can largely be credited to Matt.

As a guitarist, he combined incredible talent with a commitment to unorthodox sounds – feedback, noise, and jarring sonic bursts that became integral to black midi’s creative essence. As a co-founder, he acted as a creative catalyst, someone who could both nurture ideas and disrupt them.

Following the release of ‘Schlagenheim’, Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin sadly passed away this week after struggling with his mental health. His death at only 26 has been a shock to comprehend – it’s a heart-wrenching loss, further intensified by the reactions it has sparked.

In their heartfelt statement, Rough Trade Records, who released black midi’s music, expressed: “A talented musician and a kind, loving young man has finally succumbed despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old. He will always be loved.”

They continued: “Please take a moment to connect with your loved ones so we can prevent tragedies like this from affecting our young men.”

Mary Anne Hobbs, a longtime supporter of black midi, shared her condolences on social media: “I’m so very sad and sorry to hear this tragic news.. Rest in peace Matt, you beautiful genius.”

Other artists like Sleaford Mods and Fontaines D.C. extended their condolences to Matt’s family, while Shame, who emerged from the Brixton Windmill scene alongside black midi, expressed their devastation, stating: “Rest in peace Matt. A kind, warm soul and an incredible artist. You will be missed dearly.”

Matt was an integral part of the Brixton Windmill community during that time, playing a quietly essential role in the music that emerged from that venue. The impact of those records continues to resonate, as evidenced by CLASH's recent experience on a panel at the Gothenburg showcase VIVA SOUNDS, where a young Swedish musician approached us to express how inspiring the Brixton Windmill scene had been.

The venue referred to their tribute as the “hardest” statement “we’ve ever had to do…”

“It’s incredibly emotional to recall those exhilarating moments when Matt would arrive for soundcheck after a day of work inspecting air vents (hence, the song ‘Ducter’) and create some of the best sounds our humble stage had ever experienced…”

“However, while it might appear that someone has everything going for them, things are not always as they seem. So please take a moment to read the message from his family on slide #2 and continue to check in on one another to prevent tragedies like this from occurring.”

We are facing a male mental health crisis. A recent report from Samaritans highlights that in 2023, mental health issues were the leading cause of death for individuals under 35 in Britain, with men comprising three-quarters of those cases. Support is available – the Samaritans helpline is free and reachable at 116 123, and the CALM website provides valuable resources. The NHS website also lists organizations offering assistance.

Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin’s life impacted countless individuals, and his artistry will continue to inspire and resonate with new audiences every day. We should hold those memories dear.
