DIIV has released a powerful new single titled ‘Return Of Youth.’

The band’s Zachary Cole Smith experienced the loss of his home and belongings during last year’s wildfires in the American West, an event that deeply affected his life.

DIIV will resume their touring this summer, including a UK tour that will be highlighted by a performance at London’s Outernet on September 3rd.

The new track ‘Return Of Youth’ is now available, a poignant dream pop song that follows last year’s impressive album ‘Frog In Boiling Water.’

Available now, ‘Return Of Youth’ comes with an emotional video that depicts the aftermath of the wildfires. Zachary Cole Smith shared a message for fans:

Hi, DIIV has released a new song today, ‘Return Of Youth.’ I apologize for the lengthy statement. ‘Frog’ was an album that directed our focus outward at the world surrounding us. It presented a collection of snapshots reflecting our state of confusion, disgust, and awe. The period of writing for this album coincided with a wonderful time in my life as we awaited the arrival of our first child. However, amidst that beauty, I faced a significant existential question: how do we bring a child into this world? The recurring theme throughout the fragmented reality of the album was hope. We’ve discussed this somewhat — genuine hope, illusory hope, something that gives your life purpose. It’s a personal journey. I found it in parenthood, but you can discover it in various places. ‘Return Of Youth’ was composed before our son was born, serving as a projection that zooms in until the larger existential questions fade away. While ‘Fender On The Freeway’ found tranquility in broader patterns, this song finds it in simple, everyday moments. I envisioned seeing myself through the perspective of my child, a form of rebirth intertwined with fear and insecurity, discovering beauty and peace together in the basics of life.

At the start of this year, my family and I lost our home and everything we owned in the Altadena, CA wildfires. We were preparing for the birth of our second son and living in the beautiful world I had imagined in this song, which was suddenly taken away. Revisiting this song for its release, I couldn’t help but perceive it differently after the experience. What constitutes a home? Can one truly escape the outside world? Is hope merely an illusion? Is anyone genuinely ready to become a parent? How can you bring a child into this world? I found the major questions to be insignificant in the end. You just continue living, I suppose. Life unfolds according to its own terms.

Regardless, interpret the song and the video as you wish; it’s simply a snapshot, though a more personal one this time. Enjoy.
