Less Ego, More Compassion: An Interview with Mats Rombaut

At the forefront of his self-named label for more than ten years, Mats Rombaut is taking a broader view, reflecting on the essential lessons learned through a challenging yet fulfilling path. Nearly every season has hovered close to insolvency; nevertheless, the Belgian designer has invested in his vision for a more unique version of footwear, managing to stay afloat by diversifying his ventures and demonstrating relentless determination. Currently, Rombaut is exploring a more accessible approach, examining new design techniques that align with his aspirations for a more sustainable industry while enhancing his distinctive, cyber-inspired aesthetics.

Beginning his career at Lanvin in product development before moving to the now-defunct luxury label Damir Doma, Rombaut became aware of the rampant waste in fashion while witnessing the day-to-day realities in factories. This awareness, combined with a passion for techno-infused dance culture, gave rise to a maximalist, sci-fi aesthetic. Reviewing his work, one can see that the embellished platforms, athletic heels, and industrial details define Rombaut’s brand, enriching each silhouette with an otherworldly flair. Striking a balance between edgy and ultra-sophisticated styles, the brand embraces the avant-garde, represented by figures in pop culture like Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Ecco2k, and Hailey Bieber. Ultimately, Rombaut is driven by curiosity that prioritizes ethics and candidly addresses the difficulties of entrepreneurship. With unflinching honesty, the brand confronts challenges to uphold its values, experimenting with innovative materials such as pineapple leather, algae-based fabrics, and biodegradable TPU.

After a short hiatus in 2023 due to prolonged periods of burnout and a subsequent breakdown, the designer returned to his craft with a refreshed outlook, a renewed energy evident in ‘CORE,’ his latest collection. Launched on Earth Day, Rombaut’s latest offering simplifies designs by revisiting his archives, providing a fresh perspective on the classic Boccaccio style at a more affordable price. Made from a high content of recycled plastic and 30% recycled rubber, each shoe is devoid of harmful chemicals, fostering a community of consumers who adopt a more conscious approach to fashion, engaged in an expanding canvas for self-expression.

To commemorate the launch of ‘CORE,’ CLASH spoke with Mats Rombaut. In this candid discussion, he delves into his early beginnings, the influences shaping his work, and his motivation to keep creating in a landscape dominated by fast fashion.

Can you share where your journey as a designer began and what initially attracted you to this form of expression? I was always sketching, even during classes when I should have been focused — it was simply something I enjoyed. As a child, it served as an escape for me. Later in high school, I faced bullying for my fashion choices, and my artwork wasn't appreciated either. This experience pushed me to rebel and carve out my own space. Having grown up in the serene and confined Belgian countryside, drawing and creating became a means to dream of something different.

What type of designs and styles did you initially explore, and how did that grow into Rombaut? Before I launched my brand, I spent a few years working with Damir Doma — that definitely influenced my early taste. I was also really drawn to Rick Owens. I recall using tree bark coated in latex as one of my first materials, pushing my designs into a darker, avant-garde realm. The early days were all quite raw and experimental, yet I was always aiming to create something ethical and innovative.

Who do you consider the key influences that have shaped your identity and ambitions as a designer? Certainly Raf Simons. He inspired me to believe that it was possible to create something bold and emotional in fashion, coming from Belgium. And then there’s Jodorowsky — I admire the surreal and multi-layered nature of his work. He broadened my understanding of storytelling and visuals. Both of them, though completely different, significantly influenced my perspective.

When people refer to Rombaut as future-focused — is that a conscious consideration for you? Yes, I’ve always had an affinity for the future. I never felt truly connected to the present. Imagining what the world might look like in 20 or 50 years excites me — it also helps me navigate the present. There's a blend of hope and urgency in that vision.

However, I'm now more aware and attuned to the present. The vibe has become more retro-futuristic, connecting the past, present, and future. I’m intrigued by how people envisioned 2020 back in the 1980s.

I've come to understand that real change requires time. Whether it concerns systems, habits, or values — playing the long game is essential. Much of my work revolves around envisioning a healthier world, in every sense.
