‘Raspberry Moon’ serves as a modest follow-up to Hotline TNT’s 2023 breakout debut ‘Cartwheel’, representing a kind of self-reinvention: while their debut functioned largely as a solo effort by frontman Will Anderson, this new album features the band collaborating as a collective. Consequently, the album brings fresh insights to Will’s songwriting, weaving themes of friendship and love with shimmering, intricate guitar lines. The initial trio of tracks transitions seamlessly into one another. ‘Was I Wrong’ evolves into a heart-wrenching lament, overwhelmed by a wall of guitars, leading into a synth-led interlude that captures the flickering feeling of passing motorway lights. ‘The Scene’, one of the first compositions crafted as a group, layers piano beneath harsh shoegaze and rhythmic guitar melodies. ‘Letter to Heaven’ continues to showcase the full band’s sound with an anthemic solo and tasteful feedback. Up to this point, everything seems promising, as intricate percussion enhances the quiet moments, injecting energy and dynamics into what might otherwise resemble ‘Cartwheel’ demos. However, there’s a clinical turn in the latter half: both ‘Candle’ and ‘Dance the Night Away’ strive for an emotional resonance but stumble with wedding-like chords. While it marks a progression—especially with its introduction of deeper lyrical vulnerability and richer soundscapes— a touch more cohesion would have improved the overall experience.
